The Christian Faith

This page will pose some questions what people think about the Christian Faith, and attempt to give answers. Of course, one way of finding out is to come to our events, but if you are ready to get answers now, then please use the contact page to get in touch with us.

Why the name "Christian"?

The name "Christian" is actually a nick name given to the early followers of "The Christ". Christ is not the surname of Jesus, it is what he is. It should be "Jesus the Christ". Christ means "the anointed one", the one chosen by God for a particular task.

In the Hebrew language Jesus is known as the Messiah. Do you know that he was promised by God in the 3rd chapter of the first book of the Bible. So we are not surprised that he was sent 2000 years ago, because God always keeps his promises. He was sent to die for us. This is the central part of the Christian message. Everyone dies, but Jesus died for us, he was a sacrifice. No one else is qualified to be our sacrifice. He was also our substitute, one who died in our place nailed to a cross.

Why the Cross of crucifixion?

This is the heart of the Christian message. Many people accept that a very good man called Jesus was born in Bethlehem, taught people a new way to live, performed miracles, hated by the authorities and crucified for being a nuisance. So far this is historical fact.

Jesus primarily came to die in our place a sacrificial death. Looking at Jesus' death from the view point of the authorities, secular and religious, it was just one of many crucifixions of criminals. But Jesus was not a criminal; in fact he was declared innocent by his executioner; no one found anything about Jesus that deserved any punishment at all. Yet he was crucified and died. His sacrificial death was actually planned by God. Jesus willingly accepted this and never tired to escape or defend his undoubted innocence. We have a saying for this type of sacrifice; we say "Like a lamb to the slaughter".

Jesus died and was resurrected, surely not?

Examination of the historical documents attest to the fact that Jesus was resurrected from the dead. Jesus had 12 disciples, his pupils if you like. They were devoted to Jesus and were absolutely devastated that he was crucified. They thought that was it. But after 3 days Jesus was resurrected from the dead. The disciples spent the rest of their lives preaching the resurrection of Jesus.

Jesus' death was for a reason and his resurrection was for a reason. Please continue reading.

Because resurrection is supernatural some people try to explain what happened by coming up with more logical explanations, such as that Jesus was not dead when removed from the cross and recovered in the tomb. Others say that a Jesus look-alike was crucified. The historical facts do not suggest anything other than the fact the Jesus was resurrected from the dead. Christians know that he is alive today. He has defeated death. This suggests that death is not undefeatable, nor the end. We are not annihilated at death. Our own resurrection is possible. The other issue that this raises is that if resurrection is possible, what is the life after that like. The Bible tells us that man is destined once to die then face the judgement. This is God's judgment and determines your quality of the "after-life".

The concept of Sin

Sin is a dirty word, well it is to God. Sin is the thing that separates us from God and it is important to understand it to make sense of why Jesus had to die for us. Listen to the audio for more.

How has Jesus mended our broken relationship?

Who was Jesus and why was he sent? Why did he die on a cross. Was this an act of cruel men or something planned by God? How did Jesus' crucifixion save mankind? John will try to answer these questions in the following audio.

What must we do?

Jesus has saved us from the anger of God. God is angry at our sin and imposed a penalty which Jesus paid on our behalf. But the saving work of Jesus is not automatically applied to us. So the question is "What must we do?" and this is the topic of following next audio.
